The Art of the Deal: Mining M&A in the 2020s – RESCHEDULE

Given the current situation in Hong Kong, Asia Mining Club will reschedule this event on November 22 to 2020.

—————————

The mining industry faces a conundrum – how can an industry grow or even sustain itself when its core business is to deplete its resources. Exploration has played a large role in sustaining the mining sector’s reserve base but finding large high quality deposits is an extreme challenge. Historically the mining sector has relied on acquisitions to replenish reserves and provide growth opportunities but this strategy is fraught with risks and has often resulted in destruction of shareholder value. In a world where capital is constrained and capital allocation is paramount how can mining companies successfully deploy M&A to sustain and augment growth. Please join us to hear a distinguished group of experts from industry, finance and law discuss their experiences with M&A in the mining sector and how they are approaching strategic opportunities for growth and value creation in the years ahead.

The Art of Partnerships in the Mining Industry: Zijin Mining and it’s Globalization

Few Chinese mining groups have been as active and successful in building a global business as Zijin Mining.  At the heart of its globalization strategy has been Zijin’s strategy to embrace international partnerships with some of the world’s leading mining groups including Barrick Gold, Ivanhoe Mines and Freeport McMoRan.  The Asia Mining Club is delighted to have Mr George Fang, Executive Director and Senior Vice President – Zijin Mining Group, as our guest luncheon speaker discussing the keys to Zijin’s globalization strategy and lessons from its partnership experiences.

Streaming and the Rise of Alternative Capital in the Mining Sector

Traditional sources of capital for the mining sector are being disrupted- in some markets in.2018 new equity issuance by mining companies was at its lowest level in 20 years. The lack of capital for the sector has opened the door for alternative capital providers to provide the source of funding still needed by a capital intensive industry. Increasingly Private Equity and Streaming companies are filling the gap and providing needed capital to mining companies as well as generating attractive returns for their investors. Streaming financing has been at the forefront of alternative capital for the mining sector with companies like Wheaton Precious Metals leading the way. The Asia Mining Club is pleased to present Randy Smallwood, President and CEO of Wheaton Precious Metals, discussing the future of mining finance and how streaming companies are providing capital for the next generation of mining projects.

Value Creation in the Mining Sector and the Capital Allocation Process

The Asia Mining Club invites you to a dinner with Johan van Jaarsveld, Portfolio Strategy and Development Officer at BHP Billiton.

In a capital intensive industry such as mining, capital allocation is arguably one of the most critical decisions in generating superior long term returns. The mining industry has been criticised for poor capital allocation decisions that have led to poor investor returns and value destruction. However, leading global miners such as BHP have made considerable improvements in capital allocation by heeding the lessons learned from the last cycle and improving governance as they examine balancing long term risks and return. Come hear Mr. van Jaarsveld discuss how BHP is improving capital allocation decisions and how it is leading to better returns.
