In Conversation with Australian Minister for Resources, The Honourable Madeleine King MP

Australia’s economy is largely built on its’ natural resources, with mining being Australia’s single largest industry contributing over 70% of the nation’s global exports. The sector has remained relatively stable and profitable, even amid the uncertainty of the pandemic. Australia’s natural resources, and mining, will play a pivotal role in the future prosperity of all Australians, Australia’s engagement with the world and the global movement on climate change and de-carbonisation.

The Australian mining sector is one of those most open to foreign investment, remains a cornerstone of Australia’s high levels of employment, and a major beneficiary of research activity and technological innovations that help advance its development.

As one of the world’s leading producers of critical minerals and metals, Australia’s mining sector is adapting to sustainability challenges, while also standing on the brink of unprecedented opportunities from a low-carbon future. To achieve this, not only is new investment required, but new technology and innovations are needed, as well as enhancements to workplace productivity.

Against this backdrop, AustCham Hong Kong and Asia Mining Club welcome the opportunity to hear from Australia’s Minister for Resources, The Hon Madeleine King MP. Minister King will share her views on:

• the critical role of mining in Australia’s economy
• the opportunities for Australia to fuel the global clean energy transition
• the challenges facing the industry in Australia and internationally
• the Australian government’s roadmap for supporting the mining sector

Following her address, Minister King will participate in a Q&A. Please note Minister King will join the event by video link.

The event includes lunch, tea/coffee and networking with the AustCham community.

Financing the Backbone of Energy Transition: A Conversation with Warren Gilman, Chairman and CEO – Queen’s Road Capital Investment Ltd. (TSX-QRC)

We all hear a lot about energy transition and the move to a carbon neutral world – it requires years of investment and trillions of dollars.  But how do you get there and what do you need?  One thing you need is minerals …. a lot of minerals! Full House – The Future of Gold as an Asset Class – 21 March 2023

Gold has had a good run …. for over 2,500 years for that matter! But does gold still have a future as an asset class? Gold was first used as a form of currency as early as 550 BC when King Croesus minted coins in what is now Turkey. But the adoption of the gold standard in the late 1800s, cemented its value in modern day finance. This was when most major nations fixed the value of their currency to the gold price.  But recently many people have questioned its role in the financial sector and its value as a traditional store of value in the face of other alternatives.  So what is the future for gold and with it the gold sector? How is the gold industry preparing for a future shaped by emerging financial technology and ESG priorities.  Returning to speak to the Asia Mining Club is David Garofalo, Chairman and CEO of Gold Royalty Corp., and one of the gold industries most experienced and respected executives.  Please join us for lunch on March 21st at the Foreign Correspondents Club for an insightful discussion.

** To view the recording please click on “Download Presentation” button from below. **

Inflation, rising interest rates, geo-political conflict, price shocks – it is starting to feel like a re-run of the 1970’s! How did we get here and where are we going? What’s in store for the global economy, commodity prices and the mining industry?  Are major trends such as energy transition and localization of supply chains going to result in a repeat of the 1970’s when market dislocation and inflation turned the world economy and markets on their head?  Who wins and loses in this scenario, what commodities benefit and how does the mining sector adjust to a world less focused on global supply chains and more focused on security of supply?  Please join us for the Asia Mining Club’s first event of 2022 on April 28th for a dynamic discussion on the current global economic environment and the implications for the commodity and mining sector. Our panel includes some of the leading experts and participants in the economic, commodity and mining world in Asia: Patrick Bennett – Head of Asia Macro Strategy, CIBC; Neil Dhar – President & CEO, CITIC Commodities; Richy Xie – Head of Asia Metals & Mining Banking, Standard Chartered; and Tarun Dhingra — Head of Commodities, Morgan Stanley Asia Pacific.  This a virtual online event and there is no charge – please click on the link below to register.

Super Cycle 2.0? A discussion with Jeffrey Currie, Global Head of Commodities Research – Goldman Sachs

As the famous New York Yankee player and coach, Yogi Berra, once said “It’s like déjà vu all over again”.  The current commodity markets with record and near record high prices for copper, iron ore, lumber, gold etc. is certainly feeling much like the boom that started in the early 2000’s and ended post the GFC.  Are we seeing a repeat of the so called “Super Cycle” and what does it mean for the mining sector, global growth, inflation and interest rates.  We are delighted to host our next Asia Mining Club event on June 2nd with Jeffrey Currie, Global Head of Commodities Research – Goldman Sachs, one of the financial industries most respected experts on the global commodity market. Please join us to hear Jeff’s views on the current environment and the outlook for commodity markets globally and how they could impact the global economy, financial markets and the mining industry.”
